San Miguel de Allende, located in the Center of Mexico, is one of the oldest cities in the country. It was founded on September 29, 1542, only 21 years after the Spanish began it's Conquest of the Mexican Territory led by Hernán Cortez, in late 1521. A Spanish priest, Fray Juan de San Miguel is recognized as its founder.

In 1826 it received its present name: ''San Miguel de Allende'' honoring both: its founder, and a captain who become a National Hero during the War of Independence from Spain (1810-1821) Capitan Ignacio Allende de Unzuaga.

In 1926, the Mexican government declared San Miguel an ''Historic and Protected Town''. Several architectural guidelines were established restricting the changes of its exteriors, giving it, its distinctive charm as a result.

In 1982 San Miguel became a National Monument and Historical Zone. For this reason, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (''INAH'') jealously guards the colonial character of the city, an image were the residents of San Miguel are so proud to preserve.

Every year this beautiful town attracts a day by day growing number of North Americans, Canadians, European expatriates and tourists.
